Well my answer to that is, if the customer has the
knowledge to do the diagnosis and complete the repair
then it’s alright for them to do the repair and save
themselves the cost of the repair.
There are many do it yourself books and videos on the
market with very good instruction on home appliance
repair, that if studied and understand can help the
consumer in this undertaking at home. However, I
would still like to warn the consumer to be careful
about getting electricuted trying to save some money
on repairs. All of these home appliance operate with
electricity, some 120 vac or 220 vac and different
amperage and can be fatal if the wrong thing is done.
The home appliances that are built these days are
very complex with all kind of electronic controls
and integrated circuits just like a computer and
one should be trained on these electronic circuits
how to program, diagnos and repair problems on all
of these home appliances before attempting to do
any taking apart or repairs.
True story. On Wednesday August 19, 2009 I was
called out to a repeat customer’s home to repair
her Whirlpool clothes dryer that came on when she
turn it on to dry clothes but the drum does not
roll around. I’m sure that you already know what the
problem is and maybe the customer know what it is
too; so when I got to the home the customer took
me to the dryer, well ” low and behold ” the top
section with the control and all the wiring the
console, was sitting on top of the dryer. This
seen turn me off and I was ready to make an
about face to leave however, I manage to ask the
customer what happened to the dryer why it’s
taken apart like that, at which time she said to
me, I have some family members who are vacationing
with me and one of them took it apart to do the
repair and when he couldn’t fix it he left it like
that. I kind of got myself together and said
why would anyone who don’t know what they are
doing take an appliance apart; I also said in
cases like this when I go to a customers home
and meet appliances like this I walk away from
the appliance and tell the customer to call
someone else to do the repair because I would
not be able to do it. But something told me to
do the repair and I did.
I had to put the console with the control and
all the wiring back together and put them back
on the dryer. What the family member for the
customer did on the dryer was un-necessary.
The dryer had a broken drum belt that would of
taken me about 20 minutes to complete the repair
but I took about 45 minutes to complete this job.
The lesson that I hope you learn from this
incident is to refrain from doing things like this
taking appliances apart and leave them when you
don’t know what else to do. In cases like this
you might end up not getting your appliance fix
and might have to call around for another repair
technician to come out another day to do repair.
